Toto Wolff’s response to swapping Valtteri Bottas and George Russell before season ends

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has reportedly been asked about swapping Valtteri Bottas and George Russell for the final two races of the season. Lewis Hamilton is set to get a new team-mate in Russell for the 2022 campaign.

Bottas has struggled to launch a serious title challenge in his five years with the Silver Arrows.

The Finn will link with Alfa Romeo but he still has a big part to play in trying to help Mercedes clinch the Constructors’ Championship this term.

Mercedes are just five points ahead of Red Bull with two races remaining, while Hamilton trails Max Verstappen by eight points in the Drivers’ Championship.

It was apparently suggested to Wolff to Russell in the deep end for the last couple of races but he instantly shot the suggestion down.

“Bottas is going to Alfa Romeo, the air is completely out of there. Russell has been so much fun this season and will be driving there next season anyway, so why not give him these two races – and Hamilton the support?”

Before added: “Toto Wolff has already been asked about this and said ‘there is nothing like that in our team’.”

Race strategist Alexander Bodo explained why Mercedes do not want to shake things up so late in the season.

“The pressure situation is so high and Mercedes and Bottas are a well-rehearsed team,” he told Sky Germany.
